Abstract:
The paper analyses the net annual energy flow (heating and cooling seasons) through typical types of envelopes in nine major cities in the hot summer and cold winter zone of China. The results show that the window insulation is more effective than wall insulation and the shading is critical to energy efficiency during the cooling season. When solar radiation is strong enough in the heating season, building design should consider making the façade more transparent to the solar radiation. Compared with the single skin façade and the traditional wall-window envelope, the double skin façade has overall advantages in this region by being transparent, insulated, and at the same time able to provide better shading schemes. Therefore, the double skin façade is potentially a suitable and energy efficient envelope in the hot summer cold winter zone of China.
