Abstract:
“The Least House Necessary” is a philosophy from northern Australia that advocates for a regionally grounded approach to each project. The approach draws upon local history, culture, climate and knowledge of building technologies and traditions to inform sustainable design outcomes. The paper compares a typical modern house design in north Australia with the Apex House. The Apex House specifically satisfies the “The Least House Necessary” philosophy. Even though the Apex House was slightly more expensive to build initially, it demonstrates energy cost savings and better long-term return on investment. At the same time it is sustainable and provides high levels of comfort.
